Have you ever heard a relative, friend or colleague say something about a woman or girl that made you feel uncomfortable?

Have you heard “banter” amongst your friends or colleagues about a woman or girl’s appearance, attractiveness, abilities or behaviours?

Have you seen an altercation in the street between a couple and felt concerned but unable to intervene?

Every one of us will be able to answer “yes” to one or more of these questions. We may feel uncomfortable or concerned however we don’t speak up because we don’t know how to. This makes us “passive bystanders”. Instead of being passive, we want more people to be come “Active Bystanders”.

The training sessions will take place online and will last 90 minutes. The aim of this training is to raise awareness of domestic abuse in society and discuss the role of community to prevent such abuse. At the end of the training attendees will be able to:

  • Discuss the roles of bystanders in the prevention of violence
  • Describe the bystander effect and other inhibitors to bystander intervention.
  • Identify a range of safe options available to bystanders to safely support/challenge others.
  • Discuss the extent of domestic abuse in our communities.
  • Discuss the term domestic abuse in all its forms
  • Respond to a person who discloses domestic abuse.

Sessions will be made available across Devon and Cornwall - these are the sessions provided through Children's Services.
