An honour killing is the homicide of a family member or social group by other members, due to the belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonor upon the family or community. It is often linked to reasons such as refusing to enter an arranged marriage, being in a relationship that is disapproved by their relatives, having sex outside marriage, becoming the victim of rape, dressing in ways which are deemed inappropriate, or engaging in non-heterosexual relations.

Honour killings are especially targeted against women and non-heterosexuals. The practice, which occurs in various cultures, is universally condemned by human rights organisations. Honour violence and killings occur worldwide, including the UK.
